Madambakkam Siteleri lake has been present at Madambakkam near Tambaram ever since the British era and this lake is being restored now. For the restoration of the lake, the residents have joined hands with the voluntary organisations. Sewage pollution and dumping of garbage near the periphery have been the 2 major issues for this lake.

Now, 80% of the restoration works have been finished and this has been possible due to the joint efforts of Madambakkam Residents Welfare Association, Care Earth Trust (Chennai based biodiversity research organisation) plus the Rotary Club of Chennai Coastal.

Yesterday, there were many cleaning activities carried out in this lake by the members of the association, volunteers from the Rotary Club and students etc. Being a source of groundwater recharge, the lake has been neglected for many years. Now, efforts are being taken to maintain the lake clean and to replenish the water table. This was revealed by a resident here.

It is noteworthy that the residents have been urging the Tambaram corporation to shift the composting centre in the lakes foreshore area. As per another resident here it was clear that the leachate from the waste processing area has seeped into the ground and has polluted the lake.

This Madambakkam Sitheri lake is spread over 7acres and it has an ayacut area and its storage area is 1.7million cubic feet. The surplus water from the lake reached the Vengaivasal lake and then joined the Pallikaranai swamp. This was according to Mr. S. Thirunavukkarasu, advisor from Care Earth Trust. He threw light about the sluice that was constructed during 1888 as it was mentioned in the Govt records. The sluice was built using bricks and lime mortar etc.

It is superb to note that after the restoration works get over in this lake then it would have a storage capacity of 20000 kilo litres.
