How would you react if you come to know that the vehicle population is more now in the Chennai suburbs rather than in the core places in the city? Surprised isn`t it!!

Point is that 1100 new vehicles have hit the roads in Chennai in 2022 and this has been shown by an overview of vehicle population. It is now brought out that when compared to the pre-pandemic times in 2019 the private vehicle registrations have come down by 10% in core places in Chennai.

In suburban places like Ambattur, Sholinganallur and Tambaram etc, the number of vehicles have increased now. Factors like low rental rates and better living standards etc that suburban places offer have been responsible for many migrating to these places outside Chennai.  This has indeed led to more vehicles in the suburbs now.

According to a retired professor of transportation engineering Mr. KP. Subramanian belonging to the Anna University in Chennai, people could live in the bigger space in the extended areas when compared to the core Chennai city areas that do not have scope for infrastructural development. He added that awfully inadequate public transportation could make the people opt for private transportation in the suburban places.

Between 2019 and 2022, Sholinganallur on OMR in Chennai  SAW 3percent growth in private vehicle registrations. It is worthy to mention that it does not have a metro or suburban train connectivity. Though MTC buses are available, their reduced frequency has forced the people there to buy new cars and bikes etc. Truth is that more vehicles in the suburban places has led to parking space constraints now.

Ten years back nobody would have thought that Ambattur would face parking space problems just similar to Anna Nagar etc. This was according to Mr. Suresh, Federation of Ambattur Residence Welfare Associations.
