Until the month of October 2022, as many as 2511 AH1N1 cases have been reported in the state of Tamil Nadu. As many as 25 deaths have been reported due to related causes.

The state health dept officials mentioned that there has been no major outbreak of influenza but around 1000 cases were reported in October month itself.  After a sudden increase in the number of cases in September month, the numbers have started to come down.

When compared to 2021, the number of H1N1 cases increased many times in 2022. This was according to data from the Central Surveillance Unit, Integrated Diseases Surveillance Programme and National Centre forDisease Control. In the year 2020, there were just 276 influenza cases with one influenza related death. In 2019 and in, there were 1038 cases and 2812 cases respectively.

It has been brought to light that in 2022 the spike in the number of influenza cases has been the highest in the last 4 years. Cross reporting of the influenza cases coupled with social distancing, wearing facemasks and maintaining hygiene etc have resulted in reduced number of influenza cases during the Coronavirus pandemic. Towards September month end in 2022, the number of influenza cases reached near to 1500.

Dr. P. Sampath Kumar, joint director, directorate of public health and preventive medicine stated that now there is no increase in the number of AH1N1 cases. There are also considerably low numbers of Covid19 positive cases now.Though the influenza cases are challenging but no major outbreak has been reported in TN.
