Non operational e-toilets across Chennai city - Whose fault?

Posted on: 28/Nov/2022 9:54:45 AM
The residents of Chennai are totally unhappy regarding the e-toilets in the city. In 2017, e-toilets have been set up in many places in Chennai city by GCC. These e-toilets have turned into an eye sore now. They are just encroaching the pavement spaces in the city. The amount spent for each e-toilet was Rs 3 lakhs in 2017 and about 350 of tem were set by GCC .

The lack of maintenance coupled with inadequate water supply etc have made these e-toilets non-functional. The Chennai residents are now unhappy about the efforts taken by the civic body regarding these e-toilets. They want the e-toilets either to be removed or repaired well.

The condition of these e-toilets in places like Anna Nagar, Royapuram, Old Washermenpet etc is very poor now. It is really shocking that near the e-toilets open defecation has been done.

Kerala based Eram Scientific has been given the responsibility to repair and maintain these e-toilets in Chennai. The staff from this private company mentioned that the installation amount was not given to them. There has been due payment for over 100 e-toites till now.Only if the GCCpays the dues then these e-toilets could be managed well..

It is true that only GCC hasn`t yet cleared the dues but other corporations have cleared. This was as per Eram Scientific. Both the installation charge as well as operational fees must be paid by GCC. This was as per the official from the Kerala company. The conceptualisation of the e-toilets was faulty despite the payment dues have been cited as the lack of reason for the maintenance of these e-toilets. It was pointed out by a resident that there has been an issue regarding electricity and water supply etc in these e-toilets. For the better maintenance of these e-toilets, the GCC officers have been associating with the contractor.
