The intense rains over the past few weeks in the state of TN has increased the vegetables production. As a result, the prices of various vegetables have come down at the popular Koyambedu market in Chennai. It is noteworthy that all the vegetables are sold for Rs 10 to Rs 30 per kg at the Koyambedu market now.

Point is that when compared to last year during the NE monsoon season the prices have come down by 50percent now. This was according to some traders.

According to a semi wholesale trader at the Koyambedu market, normally in the NE monsoon season the vegetable prices would increase due to shortage of the supply from the neighbouring states. Now the market receives  700 truckloads of vegetables as against the normal 500 truckloads.

Every day, Chennai requires  5000 tonnes to 6000 tonnes of vegetables and the Koyambedu market receives an additional 1500 tonnes of vegetables. As the vegetable rates went down now, there was brisk sales at the market.

Information collected is that the unsold vegetables are distributed to the  orphanages, old age homes etc in Chennai.  At present, onions are sold for Rs 14 to Rsw 20 per kg. Tomatoes are being sold for Rs 15 per kg, potatoes Rs 20 per kg, beans for Rs 12 per kg etc. Despite a decrease in the wholesale rates, the prices of vegetables at the retail shops went up by 10% to 205. It is now said that after the perishable commodity prices decreased there has been a brisk sale now without any wastage
