Not only the heavy rains and water inundations are creating issues for the Chennai residents now but the increase in the number of Madras Eye or conjunctivitis cases also!!

Especially in the children, the Madras Eye issue is witnessed more now. It is worthy to mention that every year conjunctivitis cases would increase towards the end of the monsoon but this year the prolonged rains in the city has led to more number of such cases.

According to a senior ophthalmologist and zonal head clinical services of Dr. Agarwals Eye Hospitals, Dr. Kala Devi more than 20percent of walk-in patients in the recent weeks  have Madras eye issue.

She threw light on how allergic conjunctivitis and conjunctivitis cases have been emerging due to the chemicals or irritants and how these do not spread from one person to another. In some patients, this contagious viral infection leads to inflammation and eye swelling etc. Truth is that it would take longer to heal. In some others, this eye issue would spread easily to their second eye also. If not diagnosed correctly, the minor eye infection could turn into a serious issue also.

It is true that people consider it as a minor issue and take over the counter eye drops without consulting an eye specialist. The infection could progress and could harm the eye if the correct medication was not taken. He added that it was necessary to identify the type of eye infection and treat it accordingly. This was according to Dr. G. Aravind, consultant ophthalmologist from  Government Eye Hospital  in Chennai.
