Not only education is important for the school students, but also sports and physical activities too!!

The news that has come out now is that the High Court in Madras has directed the govt of Tamil Nadu to form a committee to monitor and make sure that the physical education is given importance and requisite infrastructure is available in all the schools. By this the HC has made it clear that sports and physical activities are integral part of school education.

It must be recalled that Mr. P.R. Subashchandran had filed a petition regarding directing the state to frame rules to provide proper physical education in private and in government schools in TN. Yesterday, 1st September 2022, an order was passed by the first bench of Chief Justice Mr. Munishwar Nath Bandhari and by Justice N. Mala.

It was later revealed by the HC that the school education secretary could be the head of the committee and it should be constituted by the government within a month.

Various benefits of the physical activities for the school children are

  • Improves both physical as well as the mental strength
  • Comradeship development
  • Instilling discipline and imbibing leadership qualities

As per the High Court in Madras, the essence of physical education is the overall development of the personality and the spirit of the student. It has brought out that the playgrounds are indispensable for the schools.

It is noteworthy that whenever a school does not have a playground and additional sports infrastructure then the public grounds of municipality or corporation must be utilised after getting the requisite permission. The bench concluded that the government on receipt of requests from the schools not having a playground must consider these requests by keeping in mind the students interests and the importance of physical education etc. Authorities must conduct periodic school inspections as pointed out by the HC.
