Yesterday, 12th August 2022 was World Elephant Day is well known. It was later revealed by the CM of Tamil Nadu Mr. M.K. Stalin in the social media that Tamil Nadu has got its 5th Elephant reserve on the World Elephant Day.

The superb piece of information is that this 5th elephant reserve is located at Agasthyamalai in the district of Tirunelveli. In balancing the forest eco systems, elephants play a crucial part. The CM then highlighted that the elephants were nature`s assets and they must be protected well.

The notification regarding the 5th elephant reserve at Agasthyamalai has come almost after 20 years after the 4 elephant reserves were notified in the state. This was pointed out by Mr. Supriya Sahu, additional chief secretary, Environment Climate Change and Forests. The forest areas of Kalakkad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve and Kanniyakumari Wildlife Sanctuary in Agasthyamalai landscape constitute the most important habitats of Asian elephants in the southern part of Western Ghats. This was as per the notification.

The reason why a new elephant reserve has been notified was to ensure conservation of elephant habitats in the area plus to enrich the health and connectivity of elephant migratory paths in the landscape through research and management.
