A Detailed Project Report prepared by GCC for the upcoming projects!!

Greater Chennai Corporation or GCC has prepared a detailed project report or DPR of new projects that would be implemented in Chennai at a cost of Rs 100 crores under Singara Chennai 2.0.
This includes setting up of 150 new parks such as sponge parks to recharge groundwater plus 50 playfields etc. This project was announced in the Assembly recently and this was according to a senior engineer belonging to GCC. As many as 126 OSR or open space reserves have been identified in Chennai for this purpose and parks would come up on the OSR lands.
On other available vacant plots, the remaining parks would be developed in Chennai. At an amount of Rs 30lakhs, each of the 150 parks would be developed in Chennai. There would be walkways and dense greenery plus seating arrangements in these upcoming parks.
Out of a total of 150 parks that would come up in Chennai, as many as 12 would be sponge parks that would store flood water and recharge groundwater. There would be pond-like structures in the sponge parks and around that walkways, trees and fencing would be provided.
The senior engineer then explained that the ponds would have recharge wells plus inlet and outlet pipes and excess water would be diverted to the sponge parks and stored temporarily. It is revealed that these parks would not be submerged by letting the excess water to the nearby storm water drains through outlets. During the floods these ponds would act as a buffer.
It must be remembered that GCC used Madley subway and Rengarajapuram two wheeler subway in T. Nagar as a temporary pond when it rained very heavily in November 2021. This was done mainly to lessen the impact in West Mambalam. The water was pumped out once the rains stopped.
Unused vacant plots and grounds have been selected by GCC to redevelop them with some basic facilities. There would be fencing as well as trees in the playground.
In 8 slum tenements in Chennai, 8 playgrounds out of 50 grounds would be developed. This would be mainly to provide a proper sporting facility to the young people residing in the slum tenements. The vacant lands would be improved for the sake of the youngsters. To get the approval from TNUIFSL, GCC has submitted detailed project reports along with the list of shortlisted spots. Estimates have been prepared by GCC to spend Rs 20lakhs for every ground.
