Good news for south Chennai residents in this upcoming monsoon season!!

Monsoon season would begin in another few months and normally there would be very heavy rains during the monsoon season. Many low lying southern parts of Chennai would usually get submerged under water during monsoon and this has been happening for a long time.
Now, the Water Resources Department or WRD has taken efforts to prevent flooding during the monsoon season in southern places belonging to Chennai. The news is that the Water Resources Department has expedited the construction of a diversion channel from Somamangalam tributary- Adyar confluence point and due to this reason there would not be any flooding in southern Chennai.
It must be noted that the channel is expected to divert excess water from this point to the downstream portion of Adyar River near Vandalur-Walajabad Road. Till now, about 40% of the work has been completed and WRD would be completing the entire work before the monsoon season.
During the monsoon season whenever Adyar River flows to its maximum level areas such as Mahalakshmi Nagar, Astalakshmi Nagar in Varadharajapuram and West Tambaram that are below the level of Adyar River get flooded. A portion of surplus water of 1000 cusecs would be carried by the channel downstream where the river was wider. This was mentioned by some officers belonging to WRD. By this, flooding would be prevented in the neighbouring areas. Point is that surplus water of several tanks and tributaries upstream join the river. Near the flood prone areas along the ORR, the culvert capacity was not adequate.
An amount of Rs 70 crores would be used to increase the depth and enhance the flood carrying capacity of the river for 13.2km. For strengthening of the bund, WRD would spend a share of the project cost plus it would spend on building walls to protect floods. This would be between Adsanur and Thirunermalai. Whenever there was heavy flow in the waterway, then these works would prevent breaches. For smooth flow, dense rocks present in the riverbed upstream would be cut. During the last year`s monsoon, Adyar River carried a peak flow of nearly 20000 cusecs in upper reaches.
