Normally, after heavy rains most of the arterial roads and interior roads in Chennai would have water logging and people would find it very difficult. This time around, after heavy rains in Chennai arterial as well as interior roads did not have water logging. This has taken many by surprise now.

Truth is that works regarding storm water drains or SWD is just not yet fully completed in most places in Chennai and despite this there was no water logging after heavy rains.

It must not be forgotten that GCC recently intensified the SWD work by reconstructing old drains and constructing new drains in as many as 266 streets in Chennai. As per a senior officer belonging to GCC it was clear that SWD works were just 40percent 50-60 percent complete in Chennai.

He added that except in one or two places there were no water loggings this time around after heavy rains. He hinted that once the storm water drain works gets fully completed then there would not be water logging at all in Chennai city.

It was brought out by some corporation engineers that SWD works were taken up in reverse starting from the disposal points and working their way backwards.

The GCC commissioner has given instructions regarding the SWD works that must begin from the disposal points wherever new drains were constructed. By this, water logging would be avoided in those places. This was mentioned by an engineer belonging to GCC. It is learnt that wherever construction work was going on water got stagnated in the pits that were dug up.

According to an engineer from the Adyar zone of GCC it was clear that this situation would change once rains continue. He threw light on how the draining was fast as the present networks were able to handle the quantum. In addition, some runoffs drain in the sewage lines. He concluded that if the rains continue then water must be pumped out in some places.

All areas including the bus stand were waterlogged on Tuesday morning due to the heavy rains in T. Nagar and this was mentioned by some residents.
