Reopening of schools in TN - What exactly is going on?

Posted on: 24/May/2022 9:43:59 AM
The school education department has been urged by the members of TN Teachers Association to reopen schools for class 1 to 12 before 20th June 2022 without reducing the syllabus in the upcoming academic year.

It is known that the final examination for the students of classes 1 to 9 ended o 13th May and from 14th May onwards the school education department announced summer vacations for them. The board examinations are going on for the students belonging to the classes 10, 11 and 12.

There has been no confirmation regarding reopening of the schools in TN though the school education minister Mr. Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi  mentioned that the schools would be reopened on 13th June 2022. It was later brought out by some members belonging to the TN Teachers Association that the syllabus was reduced to almost half and the teachers worked on Saturdays also to complete the syllabus on time. Truth is that such steps would result in lots of stress and anxiety for the students. Lack of time would also put immense pressure on the teachers to finish the syllabus.

It was explained by Mr. P.K. Illamaran, president of TN Teachers Association that the schools from September 2022 have been working mostly for 6 days a week. This would lead to stress among the students.

He threw light on the stress that would be faced by the teachers to complete the syllabus. He concluded that if the schools were reopened early then the syllabus could be taught to the students by working 5 days in a week.  It is noteworthy that the students would be able to perform well in the competitive exams only when the entire syllabus was taught to them.

To catch up with the time lost due to the Coronavirus pandemic, teachers as well as the students have been putting huge efforts. Off-line or direct class postponement could lead to issues.

Recently, the TN government announced the inclusion of moral classes in the schools to prevent student- teacher confrontations and to improve the behaviour of the students. Truth is that a section of teachers have expressed their reservations.

Mr. Janardhanan, president of TN Vocational Teachers Kazhagam spoke about how the centre provided a NCERT based 72 guidelines on the moral class issue. He added that the guidelines provided to school heads were never used due to fixation of marks. He threw light on how Mr. L. Sadagoppan, a retired DEO, has been conducting classes for the students regarding moral issues.
