There are more than 34000 ration shops in the state of Tamil Nadu and these shops provide ration items to more than 2.18 crore families.  It was announced that for the newly applied ration card holders also ration items would be issued at the shops immediately.

For the Pongal festival, ration card holders in TN were given gift packs containing 21 items and people could get the gift pack within 31st of January. The government of TN has announced that from 10th January essential items would be issued at the ration shops as these shops were giving Pongal gift packs to the public. It must be noted that there has been a shortage in rice in some ration shops and the ration card holders have not been provided rice.

The ration shop employees have told the ration card holders that the rice load was not brought to the shops and it would take 3 days to bring the rice load to the ration shops. Other items like cooking oil, pulses and sugar were available at the ration shops and the ration card holders were asked to get these items now and get rice later on after 3 to 4 days. The ration card holders have pointed out that when they visit the ration shops after 4 days the employees of the ration shops have asked them to come after another 2 days. The ration card holders expressed their unhappiness regarding the lack of availability of rice at the ration shops and said there were just 4 more days left in January.
