To ensure the safety of women on the Chennai streets, GCC would be installing 1750 pole cameras from next week. Nirbhaya fund would be used for this new project of GCC.

The pole cameras would be set up in places like commercial places, industrial places, educational institutions, public transportation hubs, parks, beaches, malls etc. In some 150 places in Chennai, the GCC has installed smart poles fitted with cameras. It is now said that the feeds from other cameras have started reaching the ICCC or Integrated Command and Control Center at Ripon Buildings. Truth is that the number of cameras providing real time data has remained low.

Under the smart city mission project initiative, the control center was developed at an amount of Rs 149 crores. To prevent crimes against women, facial recognition cameras were proposed. It is important to note that Chennai has got the highest number of cameras per sq km among the major cities in the world. There is a huge need to have more cameras in Chennai and this was as per some engineering consultants. Real data was not provided by most of the cameras that were installed by various line agencies. To improve safety and security, GCC could use data from the private cameras.
