Making hay while the sun shines!! Yes!!  This is what the omni bus drivers are doing now!!

The government of TN has announced a total lockdown on Sundays is well known to us. Many people have left Chennai to their native places in various districts belonging to Tamil Nadu for the Pongal festival. Now, Pongal festival has finished, those who have left Chennai want to come back to Chennai again. The demand for private and omni buses is very high from the commuters because on Sunday government buses would not operate due to the lockdown. This has made many private bus drivers make use of this rare opportunity to earn a little more money. On Sunday, omni buses hiked their fares 2 or 3 times more than usual.

It must be taken into account that from Madurai to Chennai a non-A/C seater omni bus fare costs between Rs 799 to Rs1600 on Monday and A/C sleeper tickets were sold till Rs 2100. An amount of Rs 459 is charged as ticket fare by ultra deluxe seater buses and Rs 920 for an A/c sleeper bus that are run by SETC.

It was later mentioned by a native of Tirunelveli working in Chennai that omni buses fleece passengers in the festive seasons like deepavali and pongal etc. It is known that many people go to their natives for these 2 important festivals. The train services are not that much available to return back to Chennai and many depend on omni buses only. He concluded that the government must fix nominal bus fare for the omni buses also or increase the number of SETC buses.

It is shocking to note that private AC seater and sleeper bus fares from Trichy to Chennai were sold up to Rs 1500 and Rs 1800. In the government operated SETC A/C seater and sleeper buses the bus fares were just Rs 620 and Rs 435 respectively.
