What happened in the total lockdown in Chennai on Sunday?

Posted on: 10/Jan/2022 9:24:11 AM
It was Sunday yesterday and a lockdown was imposed by the government to control the spread of Coronavirus infection and the newly arrived Omicron variant etc. The residents of Chennai were reminded about the past when a similar lockdown was imposed on Sundays to control the Coronavirus spread.  The lock down witnessed many policemen in various places in the Chennai city.

It was mentioned by a senior police officer that those persons who came out on Sunday had valid reasons like attending marriage, medical reasons or last rites etc. He threw light on how when people mentioned that they were going to their relative`s house due to the death of their relative, proof couldn’t be asked from them. Those who attended marriage showed invitation cards as proof when police personnel checked them.

It has been mentioned in the guidelines that those persons who traveled for marriages, competitive exams etc during Sunday’s lockdown could be allowed to travel after showing valid proof. On Sunday, food delivery partners were very busy as they received many orders from faraway places as small restaurants, hotels etc were closed. According to a food delivery partner, it was clear that he went to Koyambedu from Velachery to deliver food for a customer. He mentioned that during Saturday’s and Sunday`s many take up food delivery as part time work and despite the increasing number of people there were enough orders for daily targets.

The lack of public transport has made many travelers who have come to Chennai face issues. There were some travelers who walked to reach their destinations. A traveler from Kerala spoke about how he walked to his residence in Porur. Truth is that he was unaware of the lockdown imposed in Chennai on Sundays. Many kids spent their time playing cricket on the traffic free roads and they also ride bicycles on the bylanes etc
