In Villivakkam, a suspension bridge is being constructed is well known.

It is now brought out that the work has not yet been completed in the given time period due to the lockdown and the contractor has requested an extension for a period of 4 months. This was mentioned in a letter from the contractor Utracon Structural Systems Private limited to the Chennai Corporation.

The GCC has given an extension of the deadline to the contractor and due to this the opening of the suspension bridge near Villivakkam might get delayed.

According to the GCC resolution it was clear that the contractor had stopped the work due to the lockdown announced by the government of Tamil Nadu. Point is that the manpower for the work was drawn from migratory workers. These workers have gone to their natives in the lockdown. The contractor was able to mobilize 10% to 20% of man power even after the lockdown was relaxed. In addition, the contractor found it difficult to get some required components such as steel structural fabrication materials, Teflon glass for flooring and suspension cables etc. From Germany, these components were to be imported. The resolution also mentioned that the material transportation by seaways also got delayed due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

It is important to note that all the components that were needed for the work except teflon glass have arrived at the site. It is now said that the contractor has been carrying the work in an effective way. The extension request for the work has been allowed.  It is well known that GCC has taken up eco-restoration of Villivakkam Lake to convert it into a recreational park. This would be under the Smart City Mission Project. Already works such as childrens park, adult gym, walkers pathway, Aavin parlor, multipurpose lawn, open air theater etc are going on.
