The prices of vegetables have been sky-rocketing in Chennai Metro City!

Especially the price of tomato and drumstick has touched Rs. 120/- per kg! With this, the public has put up a strong appeal action MUST be initiated to reduce these very high prices!

In the Chennai Metro City Koyambedu wholesale vegetables/fruit/flower market; there are 1889 vegetable shops, 470 flower shops, and 828 fruits shops. For this place, stocks arrive daily in trucks from various places in Tamil Nadu State such as Madurai, Ottanchathiram, Coimbatore, and Nilgiri and from other states including Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra, Maharashtra and even from northern states.

Due to the persistent heavy downpour in the last few weeks throughout the State of Tamil Nadu as well as other adjacent states, the production of vegetables was gravely affected. Due to this, after the Deepavali festival, the prices of vegetables started shooting up! Especially, tomatoes were sold at Rs. 140/- per kg and more! Meanwhile, as the rains subsided somewhat in the last week, the quantum of vegetables arriving from the above places increased considerably, the tomato was subsequently sold at Rs. 50 to Rs. 60/- per kg!

However, presently, even though the rain has stopped, as the arrival of vegetables has come down, the price of vegetables including tomato have shot up again!

In this regard, the President of the Chennai Koyambedu wholesale Potato Traders’ Association, V. R. Soundarararajan, shared: “Usually, the stock of tomatoes arriver in 70 trucks, is now coming only in 40 trucks. As such, due to reasons such as the arrival of less stock, increase in diesel price, etc., the prices of the vegetables have shot up. The prices of the vegetables have gone up by 30% to 40%!”

Hardships for the housewives! While enquiring with the housewives regarding this development, they shared,” With this price increase, instead of the normal 2 kgs of tomato we buy, we are constrained to buy only half kg now! We are hoping for the prices to come down soon! But, instead, the prices have been increasing every passing day!”
