Not many of us would be aware of the fact that the state of Tamil Nadu is one of few states in India to have an individual child policy.  Now, CRY or Child Rights and You have welcomed the TN state child policy released by the government.

According to the policy, the children should not be subjected to any kid of discrimination based on place of birth, sex, religion, caste, class, language, disability, social and economic status etc. This was pointed out by the CRY in a press release.

CRY mentioned that the child policy adhered to the principle of first call for children that mandated all action taken concerning children by the public, private and administrative authorities and legislative bodies to be in the interest of the children.

Mr. John Roberts, general manager, development support, CRY (South) spoke about how every state must have their own child policy because challenges and issues would be different. By this, there would be a more dedicated and solution based approach regarding child rights. He later threw light on how the child policy was all about giving importance regarding the children’s dignity plus, giving importance to adolescent age groups and links education to marriage and labour etc. He concluded that these are the various aspects that his organisation has been stressing for many decades.

It is worthy to mention here that CRY made recommendations to the child policy like inclusion of early education for 3 to 5 year old kids, a renewed perspective on the education due to geographical variance, data on teenage pregnancy and child marriage etc.
