With its huge population and lots of vehicles on the roads, it is obvious that the city of Chennai has high air pollution now!!

The government of Tamil Nadu has been taking many steps to reduce air pollution is known.  In this aspect, TNPCB or Tamil Nadu Pollution Control board would be launching an initiative to reduce air pollution and carbon footprint in Chennai. As per this initiative, the high school students in Chennai would be asked to ECOmmute for school commutes. It is learnt that the participating schools would be collecting details from all the high school students in a prescribed format and would submit the format to TNPCB.

From their homes to their schools, the high school students must opt for walking, cycling, school bus/private van, using public transport, e-cycle and e-vehicles to commute. Surprise checks would be carried out by the TNPSCB to check whether the institutions meet the required criteria. By 28th February 20220, the verification process would be over and the school names would be announced. A certificate would be issued and it would be valid till 31st March 2023.

To publicise this initiative widely, TNPCB has sent a communication to the chief education officer in Chennai. All the schools must make sure that the students who cycle to the schools wear helmets without fail and clear instructions have been issued to the officer regarding this. Information is that the use of student volunteers like NCC, NSS, Scouts and Guides etc to regulate traffic at school gates were also sought.

It is worthy to mention here that the corporation commissioner of Chennai and commissioner of police have been asked to make the roads safer for the school students. A suggestion was made by TNPSCB to declare time between 8am to 9am and 3pm to 4pm as student hour.
