Now, a flood alert issued for northern Chennai localities!!

The local civic problems coupled with water released from the reservoirs from the outskirts of Chennai were responsible for flooding of a total of 99 streets belonging to 39 areas in Chennai. Huge inflow from Andhra Pradesh would result in more areas in Chennai to become flooded on Saturday, 20th November. On Friday, the number of flooded places in Chennai came down from 779 to just 39 as Greater Chennai Corporation or GCC authorities took huge efforts by deploying additional manpower, digging temporary drains and pumping water etc.
Yesterday, Chennai received 2 mm of rain but many parts belonging to north Chennai were flooded. It must be noted that from 26th October to 18th November Chennai received 726mm of rain and nearly 46 mm of rain was recorded in the last 24 hours in Chennai till 6am yesterday. As many as 341 motor pumps out of a total of 837 hired by GCC were operated in Chennai to pump out water. In several places in Chennai city, works on 2300 complaints were taken up.
A flood alert has been issued in north Chennai by the Chennai Corporation on Friday. This was due to the release of water from Poondi reservoir. To assess the situation, Chennai Corporation commissioner Mr Gagandeep Singh visited Kosasthalaiyar banks and he also made his presence felt at various relief centres that have been set up at various parts of the river basin. It is learnt that the officers belonging to GCC have made an announcement about release of water from Poondi reservoir in various low lying places belonging to northern Chennai.
On Friday, about 30000 cusecs of water was released from Poondi reservoir due to huge inflow from Andhra Pradesh. Information is that many areas in Manali New Town in north Chennai were flooded yesterday. The official belonging to GCC was busy carrying out relief and rescue work.
