Onset of Northeast Monsoon in Tamil Nadu: Warning: heavy rain forecast in 7 districts!

The Chennai Regional Meteorological Centre has informed that with the onset of the northeast monsoon rainy season, there are prospects for heavy rains in the next 5 days.

The Chennai Regional Meteorological Centre has also warned that there are prospects for heavy rains in 7 districts today (Monday, 25th October).

In a notification released by the Chennai Regional Meteorological Centre regarding this, it is mentioned:

“The Northeast Monsoon Rainy Season has commenced in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Due to this, there are prospects for heavy rain with lightning and thunder in a few places in the districts Thirunelveli, Thoothukkudi, Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar, Pudhukkottai, Tirupur, and Karur.

Tomorrow (Tuesday, 26th October): There are prospects for heavy rain with lightning and thunder in a few places in the districts Thirunelveli, Thoothukkudi, Thenkasi, Kanyakumari, Namakkal, Karur, and Salem.

There are prospects of cyclonic format developing in the upper layers of the atmosphere over South-central Bay of Bengal . This cyclonic format may drift towards West and will intensify as depression zone in the next 48 hours.

27th October (Wednesday):  There are prospects for heavy rains with thunder in a few places in the districts Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, Madurai, Virudhunagar, Thenkasi, and Kanyakumari.

On 28th and 29th October, there are prospects fro heavy rain with lightning and thunder in the delta districts, Pudukkottai, Ramanathapuram, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, and Cuddalore, and the Puducherry/Karaikal regions.

As regards Chennai Metro City,the sky will remain generally cloudy in the next 48 hours. There are prospects for mild to medium rain with lightning and thunder in a few parts of the city.

On 27th & 28th October, cyclonic strong winds may blow at speeds of 40-50 kmph and sometimes at 60 kmph in the central part of the West Bay of Bengal. So, fishermen in this region are warned NOT to venture into the sea!”
