What is making the residents belonging to the southern suburbs of Chennai worry now?

The residents belonging to the southern suburbs of Chennai are having sleepless nights now!!

The reason for that is due to the poor management of sewage and water bodies with NE monsoon nearing. The residents belonging to Madambakkam were worried regarding the 240 acre Madambakkam Lake not been de-silted for nearly 40 years.  It must be noted that Madambakkam lake bund was strengthened recently and it grabbed the attention. This lack of de-silting for nearly 40 years has now resulted in the reduction in the depth of the lake. From 11metres, the depth of the lake is just below the road level now.

According to a resident belonging to Madambakkam it was clear that the storm water drain carries sewage and with culverts blocked with garbage draining of flood water has been highly impossible here. Water stagnation in Padmavati Nagar and Parvati Nagar here has been creating many issues.

Even in the moderate rains, these places get flooded and this might also be due to the lack of inter-connectivity between the lakes. The sewage has been responsible for the filling up of Selaiyur Lake now and when it rains heavily then overflowing of the lake would take place. It is learnt that the surplus from the lake is connected to a small temporary pond that is barely able to contain the maximum flood discharge of 628 cusecs. Truth is that this would lead to flooding in Chitlapakkam and its nearby areas. The Pallavaram residents were unhappy regarding the monsoon preparedness works this time around when compared to last year.

It must not be forgotten that in 2020 inlet channels to Pallavaram peria eri and SWD in Radha Nagar were de-silted after many years. Information is that the renovation of Pallavaram Lake has been taken up at a cost of Rs 14 crores.
