Seafood prices have gone over the roof now in Chennai as the month of Purattasi comes to an end!!

The month of Purrtasi has come to an end now and the prices of sea foods have shot up by 30 %in Chennai. The fish market at Kasimedu in north Chennai was full of customers yesterday and they purchased more fish than usual. This was mentioned by some vendors.
According to Mr, Nanjil Ravi, Akila Indhiya Meenavar Makkal Sangam, normally the prices would become high on the weekends. He added that since the month of Puratassi ended on Monday and Pradosham was on the same day many came to the market to buy fish. This resulted in the prices going up by 30 percent. Shortage in the supply has led to the hike in the prices now as just 25% of boats went into the sea to catch fish. In addition to this, supply from other states also came down leading to shortage.
At the Kasimedu fish market, vanjiram fish or seer was sold for Rs 550 to Rs 600 per kg. Black promfret was sold for Rs 400 per kg, crab for Rs 230 per kg. The cost of black king fish was Rs 500 per kg and red snapper /sankara fish was sold for Rs 240 per kg. It is learnt that the sea foods bought from other states have gone down due to heavy rains and cyclone warning.
A wholesale trader in the market spoke about how usually seafood is received from states like Kerala, Karnataka, Goa and Maharashtra and how due to intense rainfall and cyclone warning there has been a shortage in the seafood supply.
