Whats the latest on the construction of ROB in Perungalathur now?

Till now, the construction of ROB or rail over bridge has been going on very slow in Perungalathur due to the lockdown for Coronavirus pandemic. This work has gained momentum now.

Perungalathur junction always witnesses heavy traffic congestion and buses/ trucks from delta. South districts take a lot of time to cross the stretch. This has been creating many issues for the public. The heavy traffic here could be due to the frequent closure of railway level crossing gates.

It must be taken into note that motorists going towards Peerkankaranai and Perungalathur stop at the gate leading to traffic getting slowed down on GST. This has been resulting in pile ups.

In the year 2010, ROB was proposed here but NHAI did not give permission stating that the construction of ROB would disrupt movement of vehicles. In 2018, NHAI granted NOC following representations from the locals, the State and railways.

In the month of November in 2019, a foundation stone was laid for the ROB and it was estimated to cost Rs 235 crores. The width of the road was reduced due to the work on the bridge. The median was removed and 4 lanes were provided on GST. The shape of ROB would be elliptical over GST Road and there would be 6 arms. It is learnt that 4 arms would help in the vehicular movement in both directions on GST Road between Tambaram and Guduvanchery. There would be unidirectional vehicular passage in each of the arms.

Information collected is that there would also be a 800 m arm that would be connecting New Perungalathur on Srinivasa Raghavan Street and another 750m to link Tambaram bypass road on Gandhi Road. It is said that both these arms would have bidirectional vehicular traffic with 4 lanes. The upcoming ROB would run 1.2km in the Tambaram- Guduvanchery stretch and 800m in the opposite direction.
