What is the latest requirement of the Ambattur, Mogappair and Nolambur residents?

In Chennai, Mogappair and Nolambur are important residential localities with huge populations.

A2km stretch between Ambattur industrial estate and Maduravoyal off Chennai Bypass is highly accident prone. The reason for this is due to the SWD or storm water drains not being closed.

Now, the residents belonging to these above said places mentioned that the  open drains pose a hazard and many private lorrys dump sewage into them .The residents want the SWD along the service lanes of Chennai Bypass to be closed to avoid accidents.  It must be remembered that last year, a woman and her child died when their two- wheeler skidded and fell into an open SWD here.

National Highways Authority of India or NHAI started to cover the canal with cement slabs for 700m distance in the beginning of 2021.A few weeks before the Assembly elections, this work was stopped. Now, the Nolambur residents want NHAI to resume the work of covering the rains on the entire stretch on both sides. By this, lorrrys would not be able to dump sewage into the drains.

Recently, some incidents of animals falling into the drains were reported and this was according to Mr, Swaminathan, secretary, JAMBA United Welfare Association. He wanted the work to resume before the NE monsoon to prevent accidents. He was of the view that to ensure smooth flow of flood water, the drains must be linked with the Cooum River. Point is that the residents want the maintenance activities of the drains to be taken up periodically along with local bodies.

A project has been chalked out by NHAI at a cost of around Rs 15 crores to cover the SWD for a length of 32.6km along the Bypass. It was mentioned by some officials belonging to NHAI that work has been completed in the accident zone and tenders have been floated.
