The GCC had recently successfully completed a 10 day mass cleaning programme and it had removed around 13000 tonnes of waste is well known to us. The news now is that GCC would be holding regular cleaning exercises every month.

It is worth mentioning here that between 27th May and 5th June 2021, GCC removed around 13000 tonnes of waste from all the 15 zones. This caught the attention of many. This mass cleaning exercise work taken by GCC came as a boon for the Chennai residents as both garbage waste as well as construction waste has not been cleared for several months in Chennai. The campaign had also another objective that was to improve the sanitation in the public toilets in the Chennai city during the pandemic.

This mass cleaning drive was an initiative from Mr. Gagandeep singh Bedi, Chennai corporation commissioner. This was brought to light by a senior officer belonging to the health department of Chennai Corporation. Information is that the cleaning drive was held because of many complaints received from the residents and social activists regarding the poor conditions of the several localities. It is now revealed that a schedule is being worked out now to conduct small campaigns every month by taking one particular division of the 200 in Chennai.

In as many as 1709 locations in Chennai, the ten day cleaning camp was held. The mass cleaning campaign was successful because of the total dedication and commitment from 19200 sanitary workers and road workers. They worked together and cleaned 10085 tonnes of dumped debris and 3260 tonnes of garbage was removed also.

The mass cleaning drive made many heads turn as GCC used all machinery and vehicles including compactors, earth movers, battery run vehicles and tricycles etc to remove huge amounts of debris and garbage from the Chennai roads. Cleaning of the floating debris to ease the water flow was also carried out by the GCC. This was also done as a part of a mass cleaning campaign. It is known that GCC normally takes up cleaning of waterways including Cooum, Adyar and Buckingham rivers etc before the onset of NE monsoon.
