The work has been going on to reconstruct British era Korattur anaicut in Tiruvallur now. Water that is stored in the unpolluted stretch of Cooum River could be diverted to the Chembarambakkam reservoir. It is now said that the Chembarambakkam reservoir would soon have one more source to bolster its storage by the next monsoon season.

It must not be forgotten that the Korattur anicut was constructed in the year 1879 by the British. Till now, nearly 55% of reconstruction work has been completed here. By August or by September, the project would be fully completed. In the 2015 floods, a portion of the check dam was washed away is well known to us.

In January, WRD took up the Rs 32 crore project work of reconstructing Korattur anaicut. Financial assistance for the project was received from NABARD or National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development. This old storage in Jamin Korattur played an important role in storing water in the Cooum River and diverted excess water to Chembarambakkam Lake. It is known that this lake is a major water body that supplies water to the Chennai city.

According to an officer belonging to WRD it was clear that the department has been reconstructing the structure that would be nearly 4m in height across the river and width of 140m.To regulate flood water, there would be 8 vents and it would be able to store 20mcft water. Truth is that in the Coronavirus pandemic it has been very difficult to source the construction materials and engage workers etc.
