Industrial units in Chennai badly affected and are closed down due to COVID infection now

Following the second Coronavirus infection wave, several labourers have left Chennai to their native places. This has led to a huge manpower shortage at several industrial units in Chennai.
In Guindy, many industrial units have been shut down now. This was mentioned by Mr. K.V. Kanakambaram, president of Industrial Estate Manufacturers Association. It is shocking to note that many labourers tested Covid-19 positive in the industrial units in Guindy and due to that the units have been closed now.
At this juncture, a package to support the ailing small scale industries that would be announced by the new CM of TN Mr. M.K. Stalin has been eagerly expected.
In the Chennai city, 20% to 30% industrial units have been shut down now but MSMEs have been continuing as they have been getting orders. This was highlighted by Mr. Hariharan, Chennai District Small Scale Industries Association president. The manpower has been reduced by 30percent but due to the orders being received some industrial units have been functioning.
Mr Hariharan later threw light on how 1500 industrial units in Ekkattuthangal have been affected badly due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Total lockdown would be better in this situation.
Ambattur industrial estate has not been affected by this second Coronavirus wave now. This was stated by Mr. M. Balachandran, president of Ambattur Industrial Estate Manufacturer’s Association. He added that the orders have been coming now and there has been no labour shortage. Vaccination has been done for most of the employees here. The increase in the raw material rates plus restrictions to control the spread of Coronavirus infection has been creating issues. He wanted the railways department to allow the industrial workers to travel in the suburban trains just similar to how the health workers are allowed now.
With this partial lockdown, the situation has been bad for those employed at textile showrooms, malls, grocery stores, flower shops etc. It was later mentioned by a flower shop owner of Alangulam that the customers cancelled their orders due to the restrictions. He revealed that the reduction in the working time till 12 noon has made him to ask half the labourers to be at their homes.
