New Covid-19 restrictions have now come into force in Chennai to control the spread of Covid-19 infection and just 50% occupancy would be allowed in the metro trains in Chennai for the sake of social distancing. Now, CMRL has taken a decision to increase the frequency of the metro trains to make sure that the commuters maintain social distance inside the trains if the footfall increases.

It is well known that CMRL in normal circumstances operates metro trains for every 5 minutes in the peak hours and for every 10minutes in the non-peak hours. After the announcements of restrictions last month, the footfalls have gone down from nearly 90000 a day to 50000 a day now. It has been mentioned that the commuters must avoid those seats that have been marked  ` X ` and must also avoid standing travelling.

According to CMRL officials, the metro rail network was designed to operate trains for every 2.5minutes and passengers must wear facemasks compulsorily and in a proper manner. They have added that the passengers must maintain social distance while waiting at the stations and while inside the trains also. A fine amount of Rs 200 would be collected from the passengers for not wearing facemasks properly.  Operational control centre located at the CMRL administration building in Koyambedu has been keeping a close eye on the movement of the passengers.

The CMRL officials later mentioned how the thermal scanners would scan passengers entering the stations and how cleaning of the trains, ticketing area, entry/exit gates is being done frequently.
