In Chennai, the number of Covid-19 positive patients has increased now. As a result, in the government hospitals, the beds have been filling up quickly.

The important piece of information is that almost all the ICU beds in the 5 government hospitals are filled. This has led to less number of oxygen supported beds. The hospital authorities are now trying to set up additional facilities for the Covid-19 patients. It is worthy to note that the bed status is available on https://tncovidbeds.tnega.org/.

As per the status of the beds it is clear that at present in the 5 government hospitals in Chennai only 8 oxygen supported beds out of 1766 and 1 ICU bed out of 919 were available in the 5 government hospitals in Chennai city. It was later mentioned by the hospital authorities that the work was underway to increase the number of oxygen beds and oxygen points.

According to the dean of RGGGH, Dr. E. Theranirajan, 550 additional oxygen lines would be available on floors 6.7 and 8 of Tower 3 at RGGGH. He added that 70 oxygen lines have been put to use. Earlier, this hospital had 810 oxygen points and now it has been increased to1100 points.

To decongest ambulances bringing Covid-19 patients, the hospital has added 20 more oxygen points at the zero delay wards. The main objective behind is to reduce the waiting time of the patients.

At the outpatient department or OP, 10 doctors have been posted and 2 of those would enter ambulances and triage to prioritise patients. A respiratory care team has been formed to assess utilization of oxygen. Conservation of oxygen would be given importance by the team. The needs of the patients would be audited by the team.

It must be noted that women patients who have recovered from Covid-19 and in step downwards have been shifted to Institute of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Egmore.

It was pointed out by the dean of SMCH, Dr. P. Balaji that 500 more oxygen supported beds have been set up at Super Speciality Block for the patients. He hinted that there are plans to add 100 more beds in the ICU. He revealed that DME has planned to supply 100 ventilators from various other districts. To the 20 bedded zero delay ward, SMCH has added 50 more beds with oxygen points. Floors 2 and 6 of the new tower block have been converted into Covid-19 treatment blocks now. It is known that at this block TN Accident and Emergency Care Initiative Unit and IMCU functions on the ground and first floors.

Dr. Balaji finally spoke about how the hospital has been trying to create more beds internally for the positive patients and those with suspected Covid-19 symptoms.
