Today - Sacred Occasion of New Moon Day on Tamil month Thai

As today (Thursday, 11th February) is a New Moon Day falling in the Tamil Calendar month of ‘Thai’(known as Thai Amavasya) thousands of devotees from other districts of Tamil Nadu as well as other states throughout India have visited Rameswaram and are thronging the famous Rameswaram Lord Ramanathar Temple dedicated to Lord Siva!
These devotees got up quite early in the morning and took the holy dip/bath in the ‘Agni Theertham’ seashore and performed obeisance to the departed ancestors! Subsequently, visiting the temple of Lord Ramanathar, these devotees had the holy bath in the 21 water-wells and then had a Darshan of Lord Ramanathar and prayed.
As thousands of devotees thronged the area on this sacred day of New Moon in the month of Thai (Thai Amavasya) to perform ‘tharpanam’ (obeisance) to their departed ancestors, the entire area of the temple and the seashore thronged with devotees!
