Over the last week, the wholesale prices of some vegetables have increased by 10% to 20%. This trend would be there till the end of this month. This was confirmed by some vendors. The reason for the increase in the prices of some vegetables was due to the supply issues. The prices of other vegetables have remained stable.

Mr. P. Sukumaran, treasurer, Koyambedu Vegetable Market Association had mentioned that after Pongal there were several other auspicious days and holidays and this resulted in lesser number of workers. Since Pongal, the number of trucks that carried vegetables to Koyambedu had reduced. As a result, the prices of some vegetables have increased.

From Rs 20 per kg, the prices of beans and broad beans have increased to Rs 25 to Rs 30 per kg now.  In the same manner, the prices of potatoes have increased from Rs 25 per kg to Rs 30 per kg. In the coming week the price of onions is expected to be more than Rs 40 per kg. Earlier the price of brinjals was Rs 20 per kg and it has increased to Rs 25 per kg. This increase in the prices was not witnessed in other important vegetables. Earlier, the price of drumstick was more than Rs 100 per kg and now the rate has come down to around Rs 70 per kg.

By the end of this month, the prices of vegetables are expected to stabilise and from 10th February onwards there would be a sharp decrease.
