Commercial water connections would help the metro water department or MWD to earn 305 more soon. Information is that the project to introduce automated water meters is now nearing completion. There are now 12,708 commercial connections and of these about 10,500 have been fitted with these automated meters.

Various commercial establishments that use more than 5000 KL of water everyday are hospitals, institutions, marriage halls, multi-storey complexes etc. It was in the month of June in the year 2019 the project to introduce these meters started. By the month of February, MWD would be completing the project. These automated water meters cost around Rs 6500 and the MWD is footing the bill. Under the Smart City Mission, the project has been funded and an amount of Rs 9.5 crores is being spent on it.

According to an officer belonging to the MWD, in the past mechanical readers were there and they showed many errors in reading. There were some places that could not be reached manually also.  As a result of these two factors not only there was water wastage but also revenue loss.

Pilot study in 2018 in Anna Nagar:
The official mentioned about the pilot study that began in 2018 in one locality in Anna Nagar. Point is that there was savings in water for about 5% and revenue was increased by 30%. From each commercial establishment, MWD earns Rs 3600 per month now.

In places like Adyar, Velachery and other localities in Chennai, the new meters have been successful in increasing the revenue. It is now revealed that over time these places would be introduced for partly commercial and residential connections too. In every location, sensors would be connected to the servers and by this both consumers as well as MWD would be able to check the water consumption plus the charges on the website.
