An infectious disease due to a virus that affects many is polio or poliomyelitis. It is worthy to note that in about 0.5% of cases the virus moves from the gut to affect the central nervous system of a person. This could lead to muscle weakness and then to flaccid paralysis. To prevent this polio, polio immunisation is being given is well known to us.

On 31st of January 2021, TN would observe National Immunisation Day and would begin pulse polio immunisation drive. Across the state of TN, kids between the age group 0 to 5 years would be given polio drops and this would be as a part of the vaccination drive.

This pulse polio immunisation drive was set to begin on 17th January itself but was postponed because of Covid-19 vaccination drive that began on 16th January. Now, the Union Health Ministry has rescheduled this pulse polio immunisation drive in India to 31st January. It was pointed out by Mr. J. Radhakrishnan, health secretary that TN would observe pulse polio immunisation drive even as the Covid-19 vaccination drive for the health workers is being carried out in many places. It is now brought out that the district healthcare workers have been intimated about the drive and it would be observed in all the government hospitals, district headquarters hospitals and urban PHCs etc.

Non- Covid measures must also be carried out along with Covid measures and this was according to some senior officials belonging to the state health department. At the Rastrapathi Bhavan in New Delhi, President of India launched the pulse polio immunisation drive.
