More demand for the power supply in this upcoming summer season - Tangedco getting ready

Posted on: 22/Jan/2021 9:18:31 AM
During the summer of 2019, the demand for the power supply was 14500 MW and it is now said that the demand for power supply would increase by 4% in the summer of 2021 and it would be 15100 MW.

The Covid-19 pandemic induced lockdown during the summer of 2020 is given importance and it is mentioned that the power demand in the summer of 2020 should not be taken as a yardstick. This has been stated in Tangedco`s petition before TNERC or Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission.

For procuring 1000 MW by using short term measures in this summer, Tangedco or Tamil Nadu generation and Distribution Corporation Ltd has received approval from the state power regulator.

From February to May in 2021, the power deficit would be up to 1000 MW. This could be due to the fact that the assembly elections and annual examinations for the students would be held at that time. This was as per Tangedco. Information collected is that about 14,200 MW would be available in the summer of 2021 as against the expected demand of 15,100 MW. Point is that the deficit would be around 900 MW and taking into account the unforeseen outrage of thermal units an additional 600 MW was added resulting in 1500 MW.

Hydro sources for meeting power demand:
It is clear that the power demand in the mornings and in the evenings could be met by hydro sources to an extent of 900 MW. Truth is that about 500 MW of wind energy would be available. By means of power procurement from the exchanges, additional peak requirements could be managed. This would depend on the day-ahead forecast of demand and wind generation. Tangedco has been given permission from TNERC to procure the required power through short term measures along with certain deviations from the guidelines issued by the Union Ministry of Power.
