End of NE monsoons in TN - The best NE monsoon since the year 2015, 1572.3 mm rains in Chennai alone

Regional meteorological centre in Chennai has confirmed that the NE monsoon has ended in TN.

Mr. N. Puviarasan, director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, RMC in Chennai said that northeast monsoon rains have ceased on 19th January 2021over TN. Puducherry, Karaikal and adjoining parts of Kerala and Mahe, coastal AP, Yanam, Rayalaseema and south interior Karnataka etc. On 20th and on 21st of January there would be light rains over rest of TN, Puducherry and Karaikal.

The RMC has released data regarding the rains in TN till 31st of December 2020 and as per the data it was clear that TN had received a total of 984.1mm rains which is 4percent increase from the average of 946mm rains. Till 31st December, Chennai received 1572.3mm rainfall.

The cyclone Burevi and cyclone Nivar that hit the southern and northern districts of TN respectively was responsible for the heavy rains in TN. Records have been set in January regarding total rains and rains for 24 hours is well known to us. Currently, the average total rainfall in January is 137.7mm and it is set to surpass the all time record of 141.2 mm that was set in 1921.Weather blogger Mr. Pradeep John was of the view that this was the best NE monsoon season since the year 2015.
