The lack of space for parking the vehicles has always been a problem for the Chennai residents. This issue won’t be there in the future as the TN government has decided to prepare Chennai Parking Policy. Through this policy, a roadmap would be laid down for creating parking infrastructure and revenue generation.

Few days back in the secretariat in Chennai, a meeting was organised and in the meeting issues regarding the parking issues in Chennai city were discussed. There were also some talks about the various steps that needed to be taken to solve the issue of parking. This was pointed out by an official belonging to GCC. The meeting was headed by the chief secretary and parking policy exclusively for Chennai city was decided. Present problems plus future developments would be addressed by this policy.

Implementation of of-street parking management project:

It is now said that the civic body has been involved in the preparation of a detailed project report or DPR for implementation of off-street management project in the city of Chennai. Presently, 2 consultants have been appointed for DPR preparation. It is clear that the suggestions in the DPR would be taken into consideration and incorporated while preparing the parking policy.

The official later threw light on how the parking policy would lay down rules and regulations for implementation of the parking oriented projects. This would include monetisation methods, partnerships etc. It is of common knowledge that the civic body is already implementing an on-street parking project where road margins have been set aside for parking vehicles on the pay and use basis. For this project, about370 roads have been selected and 12,000 equivalent car spaces have been created in Chennai. To park their vehicles on the roads, the vehicle owners must pay an amount on hour basis is well known.

Under the off-street parking project, construction of multi-level parking space in T. Nagar has been completed. Before opening this to the residents, the GCC is awaiting the testing of the electronic mechanism installed in the facility. Broadway and Mahatma Gandhi Road in Nungambakkam would also get similar facilities in the future.
