Prospects for more rain in Chennai Metro City in the next 48 hours!

Following the rain clouds which moved over North Tamil Nadu and dumped nearly 148 mm of rainfall in the heart of the city for the past 2 days, the weathermen have forecast more rainfall for the Chennai Metro City and its suburbs in the next 48 hours!

The forecast mentions that the intensity of the rain maybe less, the weather forecast mentions that the Chennai Metro City and its suburbs would receive the next round of rains from 9th January!

N. Puviyarasan, Director of the Area Cyclone Warning Centre, informed that there are prospects for mild to medium rain in some areas of the Chennai Metro City in the next 48 hours. The skies will remain generally cloudy and the maximum temperature will be 29 Degrees Celsius and the minimum temperature will be 24 Degrees Celsius. He further explained that this is due to the easterly wave which is a type of atmospheric trough which is a low-pressure zone over a larger region. When the wave moves from east to west, low-level winds or opposing winds enter this trough, converge and cause convection leading to rainfall.

 Chennai Sub-division has so far recorded 160.6 mm rainfall since 1st January as against the normal expected 4.7 mm! This includes the Nungambakkam and the Meenambakkam stations registering 147.8 mm and 170.8 mm in the last 2 days.

The Northeast monsoon spell over this month after it left a 33% excess rainfall during the peak rainy season in 2020 with 1040.8 mm against an average 784 mm. last year, the city recorded a 16% surplus rainfall before the onset of the southwest monsoon in the rest of the country with 53.4 mm against a normal of 46.1 mm. This took the annual 2020 rainfall in Chennai to a 21% excess with 1572.3 mm against a normal of 1303.9 mm.

Outside of the city, Kelambakkam recorded the highest spell of around 262 mm in the last 2 days.

Skymet Weather, in its post, said another heavy spell is likely in the Chennai Metro City and its suburbs as well as the northern coastal regions of Tamil Nadu around 9th & 10th January.

Blogger Pradeep John, in his post, informed that for the next 2 days, the rainfall is intensity in Chennai and neighbouring Kanchipuram, Thiruvallur, and Chengalpattu may reduce. He said: Rainfall will pick up from 9th January to 12th January. But that top may be on and off spells. Delta region may see good rainfall in this period. This might turn out to be heavy.
