Pre-placement offers galore for students of IIT-Madras, IT companies forms the majority

As on 28th November, 182 pre-placement offers or PPOs were received by the students belonging to Indian Institute of Technology, Madras or IITM. In 2019, 170 PPOs were made during the academic year is known. The strengthening of internship drive has been given importance and this has played a huge role in the PPOs for the IITM students now. This has been brought out by some mentors and by the placement advisers. On Tuesday, IITM would begin the first phase of placements.

The internship programme was conducted online due to the lockdown to contain Covid-19 pandemic. This was according to some officials belonging to IITM.

It must be noted that the internship drive began on 30th August and on the first day 17 companies took part virtually and made 140 offers. In the year 2019, as many as141 offers were made online on the first day is known. The IITM has got superb academic quality plus students and this has been responsible for the sustained increase in the number of PPOs. This was mentioned by Mr. C.S Shankar Ram, adviser (Training and Placement), IITM.

A direct correlation between internship and PPOs has been observed ever since an internship office was created. This was according to Mr. N.V. Ravi Kumar, adviser, internship at IITM.

Internship benefits:
It is worthy to note that an internship helps the students to understand the work culture plus expectations of the company. The potential or the capacity of the students during the training period would be understood by the companies.

Mr. Ravi Kumar spoke about how when the interests and expectations of the interns and the companies match then it would turn into PPOs.  In this year, 46% of PPOs were from IT companies.

Information collected is that the core and research and development sector accounted for 29percent of PPOs and 19percent were from analytics/ consulting/finance sectors. FMCG were responsible for 6percent of PPOs at IITM now. International companies like Texas Instruments and Microsoft accounted for 12 offers each in IITM. As many as 10 offers came from Qualcomm and 9 offers from Goldman Sachs and 9 offers from American Express.
