Reopening of schools in Chennai - Students happy but what about their parents?

Posted on: 03/Nov/2020 9:17:02 AM
From March onwards, the schools have been shut down in Chennai and in TN to contain the spread of Coronavirus infection. The schools would be re-opened from 16th of November for the students of classes 9, 10, 11 and 12 are known. The students would be longing to see their friends after a long gap but the parents are worried now.

The parents were of the view that it was not safe for their kids to go to the schools. The children won’t be able to wear their face masks for a longer time and the teachers would also be able to concentrate on the safety of the children. The truth is that if the schools ask for parents` concern then most parents would say ‘no’ and without any option left the parents would be sending their kids to the schools.

Continued enforcement of protocols would be very important and this was according to Dr. Prabhdeep Kaur, an epidemiologist. She was of the opinion that the number of Coronavirus cases has reduced and this was the right time to run a trial by giving the kids a chance to attend their schools.

Standard operating procedures or SOP must be followed strictly in the schools and the TN government must ensure this. She hinted that the classes could be conducted outdoors in a few hours. The schools must be closed once when the Covid-19 cases increase.

Seventy five percent of the students have shown interest to attend the classes in the schools and this was as per some government school teachers.  It was later mentioned by Mr. V. Munian, assistant education officer of GCC that preparations have been going on for reopening of the schools. He threw light on the government’s confirmation on the guidelines. Information gathered is mid day meal would be provided to the students.
