The latest news is the important track work along the 9km stretch from Washermanper to Wimco Nagar has been completed and in another 2 weeks of time CMRL will run a trial run of the locomotive engine before the train services begins on the above mentioned stretch.

To improve the mobility of the commuters in north Chennai, phase-1 extended project at an estimated cost of RS 3770 crores was launched 4 years back by former CM of Tamil Nadu. Dr. J. Jayalalitha is known to us. The lockdown due to Coronavirus pandemic has caused delay in the inauguration of this stretch between Washemanpet and Wimco Nagar.

Point is this stretch should have been inaugurated in June 2019 itself. After a few months of gap, the work restarted and is now going on in full swing.

Construction of station going on:
The track work has been finished in this stretch but the construction of stations has been going on now. This was pointed out by some CMRL officials.

Ramp portion is that which links the underground station at Tondiarpet with the new elevated station at Washermanpet. Information collected is that the ramp construction has been going on now and only after the completion of the ramp the trial run could be carried out.

This was highlighted by an official of CMRL. Sometime back only, cables laying for signalling work and that of overhead equipment also started.

It has been brought out by some sources that the track work in the depot at Wimco Nagar has not been completed and it might take a few more months of time. It seems that the trial runs with trains would happen only in the months of December or in January. For the purpose of trial runs, 10 trains that are being manufactured in Sri City would be used.
