Delay in the opening of multi-level car parking at pedestrian plaza in Pondy Bazaar

Posted on : 24/Oct/2020 9:43:57 AM

Nearly one year has completed now after the opening of the Pondy Bazaar pedestrian plaza and in a few weeks time the first anniversary would be celebrated.

It is now said that the promised multi-level car park here would be delayed even after the civil works have been nearly completed. Earlier in 2020, the equipment for the multi-level car parking arrived from China but Covid-19 lockdown and disrupted the deadlines of inauguration. In the month of July, the work on the car park began. This would become a landmark in the future due to the swanky facility.

The installation of the equipment has been completed and the final approval is awaited now. Information is that the technical team from Wuhan hasnt arrived yet. It was brought out by an official that the launch date would be decided at the end of the month.

He hinted that the work would be over by the December end. When completed, the parking lot would be able to accommodate 220 cars and 350 two wheelers. Point is that the adjoining roads are now getting a makeover with the completion of civil works in Venkatnarayana Road and G.N. Chetty Road. The civic body has played its part in laying the roads here and there is now increased pressure on the residential localities around the Pondy bazaar pedestrian plaza due to the festival season.

The vehicular traffic here is more now. It must be noted that the adjacent roads such as Gopalakrishna Street, Masilamani Street, Muthukrishnan Street and Raja Street are notorious for the vehicles pushing the pedestrians to the edge.

It was suggested by a resident of T. Nagar that battery operated cars display a sticker indicating that they do not charge for transport. He spoke about the lack of clarity of the battery operated cars regarding their free service.

The residents here were not sure about ten streets being peaceful even though the officials of GCC mention that the work on the plaza is almost finished. Information collected is that Tangedco had dug deep trenches for laying underground cables in Arcot Street and in Thanikachalam Street.
