Travelling by metro trains would become very safe for the commuters in the future.

For the sake of preventing the commuters from touching the surfaces inside the metro stations, the Chennai metro rail phase-1 extension would have foot operated elevators. By the end of this 2020, this Chennai metro rail phase-1 extension project would be opened to the public is well known.

There would be as many as9 stations in the 9km long phase-1 extension project. It must be noted that the stations are Washermanpet, Sir Theyagaraja College, Korukkupet, Tondiarpet, Toll Gate, Thangal, Gowri Ashram, Tiruvottriyur and Wimco Nagar. Depending on the size and capacity, each metro station would have 2 or 4 lifts. The CMRL had planned to change the working of its elevators due to Covid- 19 pandemic.

It must be noted that initially a prototype with a foot operated mechanism was set up in the administrative building of CMRL in Koyambedu. This was highly successful and this made the CMRL to convert the elevators in the metro stations of phase-1.

Foot operated elevators have been making their presence felt in 20 out of 32 metro stations in Chennai. It is now said that within a week of time installation of foot operated elevators would be completed in the remaining 12 metro stations.

An official belonging to CMRL mentioned that many passengers use metro trains in Chennai to reach their destinations and hence it was important to make the passengers feel safe. There would be more passengers only when they find it safe and more facilities were provided for them.
