Many storm water drains have been built under the Smart City missions in Chennai and they would prove to be highly efficient and effective in this north-east monsoon season.

It is now revealed by some senior officials of GCC that the NE monsoon in south Chennai would be flood free because of the above said reason. The southern parts belonging to Chennai have been witnessing heavy rains in the past few weeks. There was stagnated water on the arterial streets including GST Road but the interior streets were free from water stagnation.

In the Perungudi zone covering Ullagaram-Puzhuthivakkam (Ram Nagar 6th street),Kottivakkam (Venkatesapuram 7th street) and Perungudi (Seevaram 1st street) divisions of which one was in a vacant plot, GCC has received just 3 complaints regarding water stagnation.

The southern parts of Chennai received heavy rains about 40mm on Saturday and this has not resulted in water stagnation in the interior areas. This was pointed out by a senior officer of the Chennai Corporation.

It is a common knowledge that SWD or storm water drains have been built in places like Nanganallur, Madipakkam, Ullagaram-Puzhuthivakkam, Velachery, Taramani. Pallikaranai, Perungudi etc. There were fewer complaints from these places about water stagnation.

The capacity to accommodate nearly 70mm of rains per hour is possible by the SWD constructed in the added areas like Alandur and Perungudi and parts of Velachery. This was mentioned by a senior official.

Important information is the drain network constructed in the newly added areas that are low lying and prone to floods even for normal rains have been designed based on the recommendations of the international funding agency. This included the World Bank also.

It is now believed that the drain network established under Smart City mission of Phase 1 and Phase 2 would not go waste in this upcoming NE monsoon.
