From bimonthly to monthly - TN govt to change the billing system for the consumers

The domestic consumers in TN have been paying their electricity or power consumption bills bimonthly now. In the future, they might have to pay their bills every month. This was revealed by on Tuesday, 4th August, Mr. P. Thangamani, TN state power minister. The government is mulling changing the electricity billing cycle of the domestic consumers.

The demand for the monthly billing cycle is more and it would be discussed with the CM of Tamil Nadu Mr. E. Palaniswami. This was according to Mr. Thangamani.

It is worthy to mention that changing the billing system with the current tariff system would be highly beneficial for the consumers as their tariffs would remain in the lower slabs as most consumers would not cross 500 units. It is common knowledge that the first 100 units are free of cost for all the domestic consumers.

There is still no clarity now regarding whether the government would tweak the tariff along with the change in the billing system. The power utility, Tangedco would be affected badly if billing cycles are changed without altering the tariffs.

Currently, people who cross 500 units bimonthly after factoring in the 100 free units of power have been paying Rs 6 per unit. Many people use air-conditioners in Chennai city etc and this would lead to the power consumption crossing 500 units in the bimonthly cycle. It was in the year 1987 bimonthly cycle of billing came into existence. At that time, the TNEB officials did not want the people crowding at the bill collection centres.
