Many Chennai residents with Coronavirus infection are trying to get bed at some private hospitals in Chennai for their treatment. They are feeling disappointed now.

A Perambur based resident had tested Coronavirus positive a few days ago. She was in home based quarantine. Her blood oxygen saturation levels have decreased and due to this she decided to check about the availability of beds at private hospitals.

It must be noted that she was not given bed at any private hospital as the hospitals cited one reason after another. This despite the fact that the health department’s dashboards displaying the beds and ICU availability.

Point is the availability of beds on the dashboard meant that NO patient could be denied admission but in real it was different.

It was later brought out by a family member of this Perambur resident about how they went to Ambattur based hospital that displayed 2 available ICUs on the dashboard and how it was mentioned by the hospital authorities that it was full of patients. The patient did not look good was cited as a reason for not admitting this patient in the Kilpauk based hospital. Information is this Kilpauk hospital had 7 ICUs and 5 ventilators as per the dashboard on Tuesday.

In the same way, a Coronavirus patient from Tondiarpet was denied admission just 2 weeks back by atleast 3 private hospitals in Chennai. Inspite of the availability of beds (as per the dashboard) these 3 private hospitals denied admission and the patient was admitted to the Omandurar Government General Hospital in Chennai.

There were some questions raised regarding the differences in the data on the TN state dashboard and the actual bed availability. The officials belonging to the health department made it clear that the hospital cannot deny admission to the patients especially when the hospitals provide information about the bed availability on the dashboard.
