The issue of labour shortage has now come in the way of the normal functioning of the MSMEs or Micro Small and Medium Enterprises in Tamil Nadu. It is already known that the issue of Coronavirus infection has been creating issues for many MSMEs in TN.

It must be taken into account that from Wednesday, 1st July 2020, intra-district bus services across TN have been suspended and this has resulted in the shortage of labour.

Industrial units in TN have been managing minimum operations with local workers due to the exodus of workers. In TN, out of 50,000 odd MSMEs, just 20 to 30 % have resumed their operations.

There has been an issue of shortage of labour in the MSMEs because about 1 lakh guest workers constituting 30 percent workers from states like UP, West Bengal, Bihar and Jharkhand have left for their native places. In addition to this, more than 40 percent workers from southern districts also left, resulting in the labour shortage crisis.

As per the president of TACT or TN Association of Cottage and Micro Enterprises, Mr J. James it was clear that after the guest workers left the local workers stepped in to run MSMEs without any hindrance. Point is, nearly 15 per cent of the workers come from other districts by bus services and the suspension of the bus services from Wednesday has led to these workers taking leave.

Now, these MSMEs have urged the state government to take immediate steps to facilitate the return of workers by issuing e-passes and providing transport facilities. It was pointed out by Mr James that the skilled workers who left for their natives have been calling them to come back and rejoin work.

Mr Siva Shamugha Kumar, president of Coimbatore Tiny and Small Foundry Owners Association spoke about how the foundry managers have just retained 30percent of guest workers and 50 percent left.
