As many as 32,000 students studying in the corporation schools in Chennai would be benefited by this!!

The state government has commissioned the Akshaya Patra Foundation to provide breakfast for 32,000 students studying in the corporation schools in Chennai. The land for this superb programme would be provided by the city corporation. Governor’s discretionary fund would be providing an amount of Rs 5 crores for this programme.

It was mentioned by the Chennai corporation commissioner Mr G. Prakash that government would not be providing any operational or running costs to the foundation. He explained how the initiative was taken by the governor Banwarilal Purohit to make sure that the children do not attend morning classes without taking breakfast.

By the next academic year, this programme would be extended to cover all city schools and this has been planned by the corporation. It is worth remembering that TN was the first state to introduce the noon meal scheme with eggs on the menu many decades back. The nutritious meal scheme would become ‘Manu dharma meal scheme’ and this was according to MDMK leader.

Point is Akshaya Patra has been preparing breakfast for as many as 5,000 children studying in the corporation schools from a centralized kitchen in Thiruvanmiyur. To cater to 32,000 students, the government has now further allotted an area of 55,000 square feet. It is known that Akshaya Patra Foundation was established in the year 2,000 and is a non-profit organisation. It has been involved in the running of the school lunch programme across India.
