Chennai Corporation to buy 13000 garbage containers driven by battery vehicles

Presently, battery-operated vehicles are coming to the streets and roads collecting garbage from the individual residences. As a next step, the Chennai Metro City Corporation has planned to procure 13000 garbage containers for the above battery-driven vehicles.
Around 5000 tons of garbage is collected daily in the Chennai Metro City. These are collected by the 19158 Corporation Staff on a house-to-house visit.
The collected garbage is taken om 5482 3-wheeler cycles in the city and dumped in the 14500 garbage containers kept at specific locations.
These are being removed by compactor lorries. Presently, as an alternative for the 3-wheeler cycles, the Chennai Metro City Corporation has procured 411 battery-operated vehicles and has started using them.
Further, another 14 vehicles have been contributed by the State Bank of India.
Subsequently, the Chennai Metro Corporation has decided to procure garbage containers of the right size (of 80 litres capacity) to suit the battery-driven vehicle which will carry the garbage collected from house-to-house.
The Chennai Metro City Corporation officials shared regarding this:
‘Presently, 425 numbers of 3-wheeler cycles are being used to collect garbage house-to-house. This has met with a huge positive response from the corporation staff! Earlier, they faced hardships to pull and push the heavy vehicles filled with garbage. Now, with the battery-driven arrangement, it has become simpler and easier to collect and move.
We plan to procure garbage containers of the ideal size to suit these battery-driven vehicles. Accordingly, 13000 containers with 80-litre capacity are set to be procured at a cost of Rs. 1,30 Crores. So, the task of visiting house-to-house and collecting garbage is simplified and hardship-free!
